Nefertiti
Welcome, The world of belly dance is exciting and growing in popularity. Women of all ages and all walks of life are taking this art form to a new level.

Raks Sarqi meaning Oriental Dance, is a dance by women for women. It was never meant to be seen by men. The name Belly dance came from the French ‘danse du ventre’, dance of the stomach, a phrase given after the performance given by Little Egypt at the Chicago World Fair in 1893. The dance is believed to have originated in the Middle East; however there is evidence to suggest it existed in ancient India and the Orient as well. Finger cymbals, zils, have been found as far back as 200 BC. In many cultures the dance had ties to ritual or spiritual ceremonies.

Competitions and associations throughout the US and the world help keep the dance form pure or within the parameters that make it unique to this style of dance even though it comes in many varieties, cultural backgrounds and expressions. Organizations such as the Nefertiti and Damali Dance Company are seeking to break the myths, and provide you with a show and tell of our beloved Belly Dance. (written by Bonnie Bryant --Akasha)
