Belly Dancing Workshop and Performance Wednesday, May 3

Thursday, April 20, 2006 SALISBURY, MD---Learn the art of belly dancing during a special workshop and performance in connection with Salisbury University’s Multicultural Festival Week starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center.

Valerie Hue, better known by her traditional Middle Eastern stage name, Nefertiti, teaches the basics of the art form, then shows how the pros do it, performing with the Salisbury-based Damali Dance Company 8:15 p.m. immediately following the lesson.

Formed in 2005, the nine-member company helps preserve the Egyptian Cabaret style of belly dancing through educational performances. Each dancer takes a traditional name-Sharvahna, Vlada, Saifa, Fayza and Camilla join Nefertiti at SU

Nefertiti, a professional belly dancer for more than two decades, founded the company. In addition to her local work, which includes several annual eight-week courses in Maryland and Delaware, she shares the art form throughout the region with her series of Belly Dance Boot Camp workshops along the east coast.

Sponsored by the offices of Cultural Affairs, the workshop and performance at SU are free and the public is invited. Exercise clothing is recommended for those interested in participating in the workshop. For more information call 410-219-2872 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu. "

Dancer performs Egyptian style at exhibit

SALISBURY -- Wrapped in a head scarf and a long ruffled dress, Nefertiti displayed art through movement as she danced near mummies and ancient Egyptian artifacts at a Philadelphia museum Sunday.

It was the opening celebration for Amarna: Ancient Egypt's Place in the Sun -- a display at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Architecture and Anthropology -- and she was there to entertain the hundreds in attendance.

Known by her friends as Valerie Hue, the Delmarva dance instructor was one of 12 belly dancers invited to perform and the only dancer who resides outside of Pennsylvania.

"I've danced all over the East Coast but this experience was humbling and spiritual," said the dancer, who made the two-hour trek several times in the weeks leading up to the show to learn the moves. "To be able to dance among the artifacts of King Tut in a museum transcends you back in time."

Her love of history was one of the reasons she got involved with belly dancing about 20 years ago, she said. Now, she shares her passion for ritualistic dance with several students on the Delmarva Peninsula, some of whom traveled to the museum to watch her perform.

"They got (the opportunity) to understand that we are not only artists but there is a true history of the art," she said. "They now have a deeper understanding of why the art should be protected and passed down to the next generation of dancers."
